Orientation Day at a Global EPC Company
Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Thompson Global Engineering.

Let me start with a quick question — when you hear the word "engineering," what comes to mind?

That's part of it, Li Wei. But engineering is MUCH broader than that. We have civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental... the list goes on and on.

Here's how I like to break it down: engineering is the application of science and math to solve real-world problems. Period. Whether you're designing a skyscraper, building a solar farm, or laying a pipeline across a desert — it's all engineering.

If I may add, Michael, the key is that everything we do starts with a feasibility study, then moves to conceptual design, then detailed design, and only after that do we actually break ground.

李伟: So we're an EPC contractor, right? Engineering, Procurement, Construction?

Correct. We've been doing EPC lump-sum turnkey projects for over 30 years. That means the client — the owner — hands us a set of requirements and says "you handle everything." We design it, we buy the materials, we build it, we commission it, and we hand over the keys. That's the "turnkey" part.

And a big part of our work is managing the supply chain. We procure equipment from all over the world — transformers from Germany, turbines from the US, cables from China, switchgear from Italy... my job as a design engineer is to make sure everything is compatible and meets the specs.

Right. Every project has design specifications, technical specifications, material specifications... basically, the "bible" for the project. If it's not in the spec, you don't do it. If the spec says you must, you'd better.

Alright, let me give you all the big picture. Our company works across five main sectors:

One — Power Generation. That includes solar PV, wind, hydro, thermal, and yes, we're looking at nuclear too.

李伟: That's... a lot. Which sector has the most projects right now?

Great question. Our biggest growth right now is in renewable energy — solar and wind especially. Everyone's chasing net-zero targets. We've got three solar farms under construction and two more in the feasibility study phase.

And I'd add that whatever sector you're in, the fundamentals are the same. You manage scope, schedule, budget, quality, safety, and stakeholders. Master those six, and you can work on any type of project.

Bingo. Now, let's talk about the people you'll interact with on a project. Who are the key stakeholders?

The client is number one, absolutely. Also the designer if it's not us, the supervision company — they're the owner's eyes and ears on site — the subcontractors, the suppliers, the government agencies for permits, the local community... and your own team, of course.

Oh, and don't forget the end user. At the end of the day, if the end user hates what we built, we failed.

One thing that surprised me when I started: how much time we spend on documentation. Every design change goes through a formal change order process. Every inspection gets recorded in an ITP — Inspection and Test Plan. Every defect gets tracked in an NCR — Non-Conformance Report.
我刚入职时有一件事让我很惊讶:花在文档上的时间竟然这么多。每个 设计变更都要走正式的变更令流程。每次检验都要记录在ITP——检验与试验 计划里。每个缺陷都要通过NCR——不符合项报告来追踪。

They're standard practice across the industry. We follow ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 45001 for safety, ISO 14001 for environmental management. Different countries have different codes — you'll see ASME, ASTM, ANSI, IEC, GB...

李伟: Just one — what's the difference between greenfield and brownfield projects? I've seen both terms in documents.

Ah, good catch. Greenfield means you're building on land that's never been developed — a clean slate, no existing structures. Like building a solar farm in the desert.

Brownfield means you're redeveloping an existing site — an old factory, a former industrial area. There's demolition involved, maybe contamination to deal with. Brownfield is always messier.

But brownfield can be really satisfying. You're giving new life to an old site. Pretty cool, actually.

Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming to the kick-off meeting for the Mojave Solar + Storage Project. We've got a lot to cover today, so let's get started.

First, let's go around the table and introduce ourselves. I'm David Chen, I'll be the project manager for this job. I've been with the company for 12 years, mostly on renewable energy projects — wind, solar, and hydro.

This is a greenfield project — undeveloped desert land in Kern County, California. Total capacity is 100 megawatts AC solar PV plus a 50 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system.

We're the EPC contractor — Engineering, Procurement, Construction — on a lump-sum turnkey basis. That means we carry the risk. If we're late, if we're over budget, that's on us.

And from the owner's side, I want to emphasize that the performance guarantee is non-negotiable. The solar farm must achieve the PR — Performance Ratio — specified in the contract during the performance test. That's a pass/fail test. No gray area.

Let's talk about the project lifecycle. Sarah, can you walk us through the preliminary site work?

Sure. The feasibility study was completed last year — soil conditions are good, minimal grading required. We're currently finalizing the detailed design for the civil works.

Phase one is earthwork — cut and fill to level the site, then we'll build the access roads and the drainage system. Once that's done, we move to foundations: drilled piers for the single-axis tracker mounting structures, spread footings for the substation equipment, and concrete pads for the BESS containers.

On the electrical side, we're doing the detailed design in parallel. The single-line diagram is about 80% complete. We're using bifacial monocrystalline modules — they capture light on both sides, so we get a 5-10% boost over standard panels.

The inverters are central inverters, 2.5 megawatts each, so we'll need 40 units. The MV transformers step it up to 34.5 kV for the collector system, and then the main power transformer at the substation steps it up to 230 kV for the grid connection.

Long-lead items are already ordered — that's the main power transformer, the BESS containers, and the inverters. Those have the longest manufacturing lead times, 30 to 40 weeks.

We've also pre-qualified suppliers for the PV modules, the tracker system, the MV transformers, and the switchgear. Quotes are coming in this week. I expect to place purchase orders by the end of the month.

On logistics: the modules ship from Southeast Asia, the inverters from Germany, the BESS from the US. We're working with a freight forwarder to coordinate the shipments. Customs clearance shouldn't be an issue — we've done projects in California before.

I want to flag an HSE concern early. Desert construction means heat stress is a real issue. We'll need a heat illness prevention plan, shade structures, hydration stations, and acclimatization protocols. I'll include all of this in the site-specific HSE plan.

I'll develop an ITP for every major work package — civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation. Each ITP will list the inspection points, the acceptance criteria, and the relevant standards.

We'll have a dedicated material receiving inspection process. Every shipment gets checked against the spec and the purchase order before it's accepted. We also do FAT — Factory Acceptance Testing — on major equipment before it leaves the factory.

Once construction starts, we'll have daily inspections, and I'll issue weekly quality reports. Defects get logged as NCRs — Non-Conformance Reports — and tracked to closure.

I appreciate the thorough approach. One thing I want to add: the commissioning phase is critical. Too many EPC projects stumble at the finish line because commissioning wasn't planned properly.
