We're shipping two crawler cranes and four welding machines from our Chile project to the Argentina solar site. These are for temporary use only — about 8 months. What's the best customs regime?

For Argentina, you want the "importación temporal" regime. You'll need to submit a detailed equipment manifest with serial numbers, values, and estimated re-export date. We need to post a bond equal to the import duties — roughly 20% of the CIF value. If the equipment is re-exported within the permit period, the bond is released in full.

You can apply for an extension — up to 12 months total in Argentina. But you must apply at least 30 days before expiry. If you miss the deadline or the equipment stays beyond the permitted period, the bond is forfeited and you'll face penalties. I recommend we set the initial permit for 12 months from the start to give us buffer. The bond amount is the same regardless.
