The first batch of expat staff — 35 Chinese engineers and supervisors — arrives in three weeks. Is the camp ready for occupancy?

The living quarters are completed — 48 container units configured as 24 double rooms and 24 single rooms. Water, power, and sewage are operational. The canteen kitchen is installed but the catering contractor doesn't start until next week. The laundry equipment arrives tomorrow. Internet — we have Starlink set up and it's working. The real gap is the recreational facilities — the gym equipment and TV room won't be ready for another 4 weeks.

Three weeks with no gym or recreation is tough, especially in a remote location. These guys will be working 10-hour days, 6 days a week. Can we at least set up a temporary TV and some table tennis tables?

I can do that. I'll buy two ping-pong tables and a projector for movie nights locally. Also, I want to establish the camp rules briefing before they arrive — we need everything translated into Chinese and Spanish. The key rules: no alcohol on camp, quiet hours from 10 PM to 5 AM, and the curfew is midnight. I also need to brief them on the emergency procedures — fire drills, medical evacuation, and the muster point location.

We have a problem. Two workers from different subcontractors got into a fight in the canteen last night — apparently over cutting in the dinner line. One has a bruised cheek. Both are staying in the same accommodation block. What's the protocol?

First, separate them immediately — I'll move one to a different block. Both have violated the camp rules — fighting is automatic suspension from camp pending investigation. I'll issue both a written notice of violation today. The worker with the bruise should be checked at the clinic. Second, I'll notify their respective subcontractor managers — they're responsible for disciplining their own workers. This isn't just a camp issue; it could spill over to the worksite.

Agreed. What about preventing this? We have 400 workers from 5 nationalities living in close quarters. Tensions are inevitable.

I have three ideas. One: assign accommodation by subcontractor team, not mixed. People behave better among their own colleagues who they work with daily. Two: organize weekly mixed-nationality sports — football tournaments on Sundays. When people play together, they fight less. Three: train the canteen staff to manage queues — it's amazing how many camp fights start over food lines. I'll implement all three starting this week.
